bio
Hi! My name is Sam Dodie Block and I'm the artist behind Sam Dodie Studio. My middle name, pronounced "dough-dee", was my Great Grandma's and short for Doris.
I've been working with clay since 2012, when I took my first wheelthrowing class at University of California, Davis. In 2015 I graduated with a BA in Design and a minor in Psychology. I worked as a graphic designer for the next 6 years designing experiential graphics, wayfinding systems, and narrative environments. During that time I kept taking ceramics classes and it quickly became a big part of my life. In 2021, I left my career in design to focus on ceramics full time.

I now work out of my home studio in Seattle, Washington, making functional wares and sculptural objects and teach classes & workhops at community studios in the city.

artist statement

Often through the subject of food, I strive to evoke a sense of nostalgia and childlike joy. I want the user to see function as art and art as function, to find humor in the everyday, and to have fun in their daily routines. I find comfort in repetitive motions and my process involves a combination of wheelthrowing, handbuilding, & freehand painting. I play with realism; the ceramics sitting somewhere between cartoon and lifelike. Each piece is often part of a larger collection that tells a story, and with each collection I create an immersive experience. My objective is to challenge the expected and with a focus on craftsmanship and detail, make ceramics that will make you smile.
